Team member wellbeing will be considered in everything we do

Team member wellbeing is at the heart of enabling our people to live and work well and we are focused on making sure that everyone at Whitbread cares and feels cared for. We are committed to considering wellbeing in everything we do, listening to teams to ensure their views help inform decision making and proactively finding new and better ways to support the physical and mental wellbeing of our teams.

We listen to our teams, ensuring their views help inform decision making

At Whitbread we recognise that to provide the best experiences for our guests, we need to provide the best experiences for our team members. We therefore provide regular opportunities to listen to our team members so we can understand what’s most important to them at work.

Everyone has the opportunity to take part in our annual Your Say survey which focuses on understanding how engaged our team members are, whether we give them the tools they need to do their jobs, as well as understanding their views on their line manager and senior leaders.

We also run regular listening groups through the business which help us to really get under the skin of issues which frustrate our team members, whether that’s listening to particular job roles, areas of the business or certain sites – we recognise that to feel valued our teams need to feel listened to.

Taking action as a result of what we’ve heard is just as important as listening. That’s where our Employee Forums come in. They are the eyes and ears of the business and help connect our senior leaders to our front-line teams who serve our guests and run our sites. Employee Forums also play an important part in helping shape decisions, understanding the team member perspective and working with the business so that any changes are considered with team members in mind.

We will support the physical and mental wellbeing of our teams

At Whitbread, we’re always seeking to find further opportunities to support the physical and mental wellbeing of our teams. We’ve trained key members of our management and support teams to be Mental Health First Aiders and we continue to be a proud subscriber to Hospitality Action’s support services via their Employee Assistance Programme which includes:

  • Improving health and wellbeing
  • Dealing with financial pressures including debt advice and hardship grants subject to meeting the lower earning financial criteria
  • Managing working life
  • Helping to overcome personal challenges including counselling, bereavement support, plus a specific parenting helpline
  • Legal information and guidance
