Diversity and inclusion

At Whitbread we believe that embracing difference is not only the right thing, it’s the smart thing. Diversity in people creates diversity of thought, and diversity of thought leads to new ways of thinking and doing. So we aren’t just accepting of difference, we value it and we welcome it with open arms.

key commitments to improve Diversity and Inclusion

We’re committed to supporting all our colleagues, including those from under-represented groups such as those who are ethnically diverse, identify as gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, trans sexual, non-binary or use another term, and people with disabilities.  Whilst we have made significant progress in the last 12 months, we recognise we have more to do, to be both more diverse and more inclusive.

  • We have invested in the creation of a new diversity and inclusion centre of expertise, allowing us to have an unrelenting focus on this agenda
  • We have given our leaders tools and resources including dedicated training to equip them to build and support a more inclusive environment
  • We have set up our first Race, Religion and Culture network to ensure minority groups have a voice and empower them help us drive change
  • Our already established network supporting our LGBTQ+ community continues to go from strength to strength
  • We have created an annual communication plan focused on Diversity and Inclusion to ensure diversity is celebrated at key points throughout the year including; Black History Month, International Women’s Day, Race and Equality Week, LGBQ History Month, Religious holidays

Our commitments to greater diversity

  1. Have greater diversity in our leadership population, with targets of 8% ethnic minority and 40% female representation in our top 100 by the end of 2023
  2. Have targets for greater ethnic diversity in our middle management population through stringent recruitment practices that mitigate individual biases
  3. Invest more in our diverse talent pipeline to ensure we can promote our diverse talent equitably
  4. Complete an ethnicity pay gap analysis and share our results and findings with all our colleagues in 2021

Our commitments to championing inclusivity

  1. Equip all our leaders to be fluent around diversity and inclusion, through mandated development
  2. Amplify the voices of all our minorities, through the sponsorship of networks and forums
  3. Review our organisational policies to make sure they are inclusive of all minority groups
  4. Celebrate key cultural events throughout the year

“Creating an environment of inclusion must take on two forms; the ability for our LGBTQ+ community to have the space and network to be authentic and feel safe in the workplace, alongside the explicit inclusion from others through policy, role models and listening forums.

We have worked hard to celebrate and educate our teams on events such as LGBTQ+ History Month and Pride at Whitbread. There will always be work to do, to strive for systemic inclusion through every part of our business, but I’m proud to know we’re able to make these steps by being listened to, supported and seeing the change.”
