Costa Reading Week

Costa has long had a connection with reading, ever since it took over the sponsorship of the Costa Book Awards in 2005. Our interest in books and reading has led us to partner with the Police Community Clubs of Great Britain to organise Costa Reading Week.

We are committed to enabling our team members to build relationships with local schools, and we therefore host a nationwide reading event each year to support this. Over 500 of our stores participate in Costa Reading Week, with in-store reading activities accompanying the donation of educational books to local schools.

Costa Reading Week is a collaborative event; we work with organisations who are experts in their field, and we couldn’t host Reading Week without them. As signatories of the Business Literacy Pledge, we are working closely with the National Literacy Trust in order to focus Reading Week 2017 on areas of the UK where their research has found literacy levels to be lowest. By collaborating with Keep Britain Tidy and Helping Hand Environmental, we have also been able to provide schools with resources that teach children about the importance of litter at the same time as developing their literacy skills. The relationships that the Police Community Clubs have with UK schools, as well as their organisational abilities, help us to bring the whole event together and ensure that it is a huge success.

We have also developed a website specifically for UK Secondary school teachers to provide schools with the resources they need to support the delivery of Key Stage Three Geography. The website, www.costaforschools.com, provides information about coffee, coffee growing communities and farming, and includes information from Costa, Rainforest Alliance and the Costa Foundation. It offers downloadable resources, giving teachers and students knowledge and materials to enable more young people to understand the origins of our day to day commodities and the challenge of sustainable farming. Currently, the website focuses on the delivery of Key stage Three Geography, that is taught in all of the UK’s 5000+ Secondary schools. Over time, the material will be expanded to target the teaching resources for primary and sixth form students.

The Costa for Schools project also helps Costa’s store teams connect and build relationships with their local schools. Store Managers regularly deliver inspirational talks to their local schools about the work of coffee farmers and the journey of the coffee bean as it makes its way around the world and into cups within households and coffee shops all over the world.
