Costa Coffee Cup Recycling

From our coffee cups to carbon, we will always look for ways to reduce, reuse and recycle the resources we use and the waste we create.

As a big business working across the globe, we will always ensure that we are doing all we can to operate in a way that respects our people and the planet. 2.5 billion cups are thrown away across the UK each year and as the nation’s favourite coffee shop, we’re determined to take a lead in reducing that number and so we have made a bold pledge. We are committing to recycle the same volume of takeaway cups that our customers use – half a billion takeaway cups a year by 2020 – by subsidising the cost of collecting and recycling them.

We have pledged to pay a supplement of £70 to waste collectors for every tonne of cups collected. This will increase their value by 150%, creating a market for cups as a valuable recyclable material and incentivising waste collectors to establish infrastructure and processes to prevent them from ending up in landfill.

Our commitment means up to 100 million cups will be recycled this year alone and if the nation’s other coffee chains sign up, there is no reason why all takeaway cups could not be recycled by as early as 2020.

Cup recycling sits alongside our other Force for Good work to reduce our environmental impact, including the 25p discount we give to customers who use a reusable cup, our recent decision to replace plastic straws with a non-plastic alternative later this year and our involvement in Refill which allows people to refill their water bottles for free across 3000 Whitbread sites.

It’s both the everyday efficiencies and the bold new innovations that will continue to drive our work on reducing the environmental impact of all our operations.
