It’s also important to the UK economy. A report commissioned by the British Hospitality Association and prepared by Oxford Economics (2010) shows that the hospitality industry is the UK’S fifth largest employer - directly employing over 2.4 million people.

Premier Inn has approximately 6% of the total UK hotel market. Within the budget hotel sector, just 4 brands account for 80% of all budget hotel rooms, Premier Inn being the largest budget hotel chain in the UK. 

Whitbread’s pub restaurants compete in the total out-of-home eating market worth some £40 billion in the UK today.

 

Costa Coffee: 2010 UK Market Share

 

It is estimated that there are some 9,500 coffee shops in the UK, with 4,000 of these being branded coffee shops. Of these Costa is well positioned with over 1,000 stores in the UK.

 

Strong prospects for growth

 

The budget hotel sector has strong prospects for growth with a projected compound annual growth rate of 10% over the next 10 years.

The growth projection for the coffee shop market is around 8% per annum.
