Costa Coffee announce expansion plans in Spain

Costa Coffee, Europe’s largest coffee shop chain and part of Whitbread PLC, today announced plans to expand its presence into mainland Spain.

Over the past five years, Costa Coffee has grown rapidly, opening on average 150 international stores every year.    At present Costa operates across 30 countries and has more than 2,800 stores globally, covering operations in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, India, China and South East Asia.

The expansion into Spain sees Costa enter into two new regional franchise agreements with Sandpiper Iberia and The Coffee Company Spain Limited adding to their current Airport partner, Airfoods. The first Costa Coffee store outside of the airports will open in Malaga within the next two months.

Andy Marshall, Managing Director of Costa Coffee International Franchise commented “Costa is a truly global brand that is enjoyed by customers all over the world.  It is great news that we’re extending our presence in Spain, an exciting market where there is already an established coffee culture.

“We believe it is the right time for Costa Coffee to offer the Spanish people our unique Mocha Italia blend and quality handcrafted coffee, and we envisage a significant store opening programme over the coming years.

“We now have three great partners in Sandpiper Iberia, The Coffee Company Spain Limited and Airfoods, and we look forward to working with them to deliver this exciting opportunity.”

Costa continues to grow in to new markets integrating local tastes and preference, in order to become the destination of choice for irresistible coffee across the world.

About Costa Coffee

Costa Coffee was founded in London by Italian brothers Sergio and Bruno Costa in 1971 and now represents the second largest coffee shop chain in the world.

At present the company operates across 30 countries and has more than 2,800 stores globally, covering operations in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, India, China and South East Asia.

Costa Coffee has been voted “Best Branded Coffee Shop Chain in the UK and Ireland" by Allegra Strategies for four years running (2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013), “Best Branded Coffee Shop Chain in Europe” for three years running (2011, 2012, 2013) and also Winner of “Best Branded Coffee Shop Chain in Southern Europe” in 2013.

Just 1% of the world’s production of coffee is good enough for Costa and only the very best 100% Rainforest Alliance certified coffee can go into creating the unique taste and aroma of our Mocha Italia blend.

Costa Coffee is committed to looking after our coffee-growers, which is why Costa established The Costa Foundation, a registered charity. The Foundation's aims are to relieve poverty, advance education and the health and environment of coffee-growing communities around the world. So far, we have worked on over 42 school projects and improved the social and economic welfare of coffee-growing communities.
