Energy keeps our hotels, restaurants and coffee shops running. We aim to make our business as energy efficient as possible by using less power and fuel to achieve the same result. We’re committed to making our hotels and restaurants the lowest carbon producing businesses in our sector and achieving the lowest carbon footprint possible in our Costa stores.
Between 2009 and 2014, we reduced our carbon emissions by 35.88 % and in 2016 we met our 2017 target of 25% reduction in carbon emissions. We therefore set a new 2020 target of:
Reduce carbon by 15% relative to sales turnover (against a new 2014/15 baseline)
Here's some of the ways we're saving energy:
We've installed super high insulation in our hotels and restaurants, saving 20% gas usage per site
We've replaced 100,000 standard light bulbs with LED lamps, saving over £2m and 10,000 tonnes of CO2
Costa’s new Valina coffee machines use 27% less energy than its predecessor
We have 40 BREEAM certified hotels, restaurants and coffee shops
We install energy saving Combined Heat & Power units in our new build Premier Inns
Leaving a computer on overnight for a year creates enough CO2 to fill a double-decker bus.
